    Drive-In Rack in Detroit, MI

A Detroit warehouse can have a full floor and unused height at the same time. In converted buildings around Milwaukee Junction and Southwest Detroit, columns interrupt rows and dock space doubles as overflow storage. Adding inventory without changing that arrangement pushes more handling into aisles that should stay clear. Hold bulk building-product pallets in dedicated lanes while retaining accessible mixed inventory in Southwest Detroit. Drive-in warehouse racking exchanges individual pallet access for deep storage of a few repeat items. The forklift enters the lane and places pallets on support rails. One-ended drive-in runs last in, first out; drive-through arrangements allow access at both ends. The choice must fit SKU depth, rotation and the dimensions of the lift truck.

For Detroit, the first step is a free warehouse design consultation that turns the storage problem into a layout and an itemized quote, not a guess about how many positions will fit. Send the load dimensions, weights and floor plan, and we will discuss the access and storage tradeoffs before specifying the system.

Why Detroit Warehouses Work With Us

Milwaukee Junction, Eastern Market and the Delray industrial belt present different storage decisions. Food distribution needs lot control, while building products and automotive containers bring different weights and handling methods. I-75 and I-94 provide regional access, but the receiving area inside the building still determines whether a delivery can be unloaded without disrupting outbound work. Hold bulk building-product pallets in dedicated lanes while retaining accessible mixed inventory in Southwest Detroit.

For drive-in rack, the lift truck is part of the design input. Overall width, mast and load-backrest clearance, rail elevations and pallet overhang all need checking. We dedicate lanes to inventory that can occupy them and keep mixed items accessible elsewhere. Guide rails and protection belong in the initial scope, not after contact damage occurs. Detroit Pallet Rack, a division of Warehouse Equipment & Supplies Co., connects those decisions with the project quote. You receive a drawing to review, the proposed components and capacities, and an installation sequence tied to the work areas you can release. We discuss the tradeoffs with your operations team before ordering material rather than treating a higher position count as the only measure of a successful project.

    How Drive-In Rack Works

Deep pallet lanes with forklift access inside the rack. A practical option for bulk quantities of a few SKUs.

    1

    Continuous rails, not beams

Pallets rest on rails carried by upright frames rather than individual beam levels, so a lane accepts pallet after pallet at the same elevation.

    2

    The truck enters the lane

The driver travels inside the bay to place or retrieve each load. Lane width, rail height, and mast clearance get dimensioned to that specific truck, not a generic one.

    3

    One open end or two

One open end gives LIFO and deep storage with limited selectivity. Two open ends give FIFO with slightly fewer positions, since each lane now needs clearance from both sides.

    4

    Guarding built into the design

Guide rails, column guards, and rail-end protection are part of the spec from the start, because a lane that takes daily contact from forklifts is a lane that will eventually take a hit.

What a Drive-In Rack Project Includes

Your Detroit drive-in rack project begins with the current load list, a floor plan and a discussion of daily handling.

The design starts with the forklift, not the rack. Mast height, overall width, load backrest, and turning clearance decide lane dimensions, so truck specifications get collected before anything is drawn.

Next we look at SKU depth. Drive-in rewards deep lanes of a single product and punishes variety - if a lane never fills, you've built an expensive way to store less than you could have with selective. Where the inventory profile is mixed, we'll usually recommend a hybrid: selective at the pick face, drive-in behind it for reserve.

The quote itemizes frames, rails, rail supports, guide rails, and column protection, with a CAD drawing showing lane depth, rail elevations, and total positions. Experienced installation crews we schedule and manage anchor, plumb, and align every rail run, then verify a loaded pallet travels the full lane before handing the system over.

Because drive-in lanes take contact from lift trucks over time, replacement rails and guards are identified in the quote and kept available for your system as it ages.

Delivery and installation are agreed against the approved drawing and the areas your team can release. We review access for unloading, the sequence of rows and the material that needs to arrive first. Confirm the load assumptions before handover and retain the layout and capacity records for future additions. If the product mix changes, review the affected levels or lanes before putting different loads into service.

For the Milwaukee Junction area, receiving access and active work zones are confirmed alongside the drawing. The final scope separates material, delivery coordination and installation so your team can compare proposals on the same basis. Keep the approved layout and capacity information for later changes rather than assuming a future load will fit the original design.
